Distinguished and Famous people from Mooroopna
🎵 Archie Roach
Archie Roach was born in Mooroopna and spent early family years at Framlingham before being forcibly removed as a child. His song Took the Children Away turned that experience into a deeply personal account that reached listeners across generations. Music, storytelling and work with young people remained central to his contribution, alongside his partnership with Ruby Hunter. His memoir Tell Me Why received a Victorian Premier’s Literary Award. Mooroopna is the birthplace chapter in a life that moved through profound loss towards a public voice associated with family, culture, dignity and the possibility of healing.
🏉 Clayton Oliver
Clayton Oliver played senior football at Mooroopna as a teenager and moved to the town to be closer to school during his final secondary year. The experience against mature opponents preceded a strong season with the Murray Bushrangers and selection in the 2015 AFL draft. At Melbourne he became a premiership midfielder and multiple club best-and-fairest winner. The Mooroopna period was a practical developmental stage involving school, a local team and a change of junior competition. It helps explain the preparation behind a player later recognised for winning possession under intense pressure.
🏉 Billy Wong and family
Billy Wong played 312 senior games for Mooroopna and was inducted into the Goulburn Valley league’s Hall of Fame. His connection was part of a much longer family involvement, extending across four generations of the club. Earlier relatives contributed as players, trainers and committee members, keeping the off-field work going alongside the matches. The AFL’s account of that Chinese-Australian football history gives the town a story of belonging built over time. The achievement is not simply one player’s game tally, but a family’s repeated contribution to the institution around him.
